The Railway Path to Corbière
Jersey's perfect first ride: a flat, traffic-free old railway line from St Helier along St Aubin's Bay to the island's most iconic lighthouse. No hills, no cars, all coast.
Why this is Jersey's favourite first ride
If you only do one ride in Jersey, make it this one. The route follows the seafront promenade around the sweep of St Aubin's Bay, then picks up the old Jersey Railway line — closed in 1936 and now a beautiful traffic-free path — climbing so gently through wooded cuttings that you barely notice you're going up. It ends at Corbière Lighthouse, perched on its tidal rock at the island's south-western tip: the most photographed spot in Jersey, and the backdrop to an unbeatable mid-ride break.
Because it's flat, safe and impossible to get lost on, it suits everyone — families with kids, couples on a first ride in years, and anyone who wants sea views without earning them the hard way. Total distance from our shop and back is about 14 miles (23 km), a comfortable two hours of riding at holiday pace, plus however long you linger at the lighthouse.
The route, leg by leg
Our team will also talk you through it (and mark up your free island map) when you collect your bikes.
Lakeys, 23 Esplanade → West Park
Roll straight out of the shop onto the seafront and head west — you're on the car-free cycle path within two minutes.
St Aubin's Bay promenade
Three miles of flat, wide promenade curving around the bay, with the sea on your left the whole way. Watch for walkers and keep an easy pace.
St Aubin village
A pretty harbour village and natural coffee stop — plenty of cafés around the port. This is where the old railway line begins.
The Railway Path
Follow the wooded, traffic-free path of the old St Aubin–Corbière railway. It rises so gradually through the cuttings that it never feels like a climb.
Corbière Lighthouse
The path delivers you almost to the headland. Take in the view, grab your photos, check the tide-covered causeway — then turn around and enjoy the gentle descent home.
Tips for the ride

Any bike handles this route — a touring or hybrid bike from £25/day is perfect. Want to extend along the west coast after the lighthouse? Take an e-bike and keep going.
When to go
Morning rides get the calmest promenade; late afternoon gets golden light on the lighthouse. Sunset at Corbière is special — just leave time to ride back before we close at 5pm.
What's included
Helmet, lock, island map and breakdown cover come free with every hire — and we'll point out the route before you set off.
Railway Path FAQs
Is the Railway Path suitable for children?
Yes — it's Jersey's most family-friendly ride: flat, traffic-free and easy to follow. We hire kids' bikes, tag-alongs, trailers and baby seats too.
How long does the ride take?
About two hours of riding at a leisurely pace for the 14-mile round trip, plus stops. Most people make a half-day of it with a café stop in St Aubin and time at the lighthouse.
Do I need an e-bike for this route?
No — it's gentle enough for any bike. Choose an e-bike if you want to carry on exploring the west coast afterwards, where the hills begin.
Can I walk out to the lighthouse itself?
Corbière sits on a tidal island — the causeway is only accessible at lower tides, so check tide times and never cross when the water is rising.
